Professor Fischer is recognized as a world-famous discoverer of "exoplanets" - i.e., planets around stars other than our Sun. Her group discovered a large fraction of the hundreds of exoplanets now known. She established the link between the evolutionary state of a star and its probability of hosting one or more planets. For this work she received the 2002 Carl Sagan award of the American Astronautical Society.
